MPHS FFA sophomore Jonathan Dalby and junior Lakyn Fortenberry competed at the Fort Worth Livestock Show and Rodeo on Saturday, January 28 in the Calf Scramble Performance. Dalby was able to catch and halter a calf and was awarded a certificate valued at $500. The certificate proceeds are used to purchase a heifer that the participants care for and prepare for exhibition at the Stock Show the following year. Those who complete the Calf Scramble Program may be eligible for scholarships based on the quality and content of monthly reports submitted to Calf Scramble Program sponsors, the effort devoted to caring for and exhibiting their heifer, and their final essay outlining their Calf Scramble experience. Since 1987, almost $3 million in scholarships has been awarded to 1,478 Calf Scramble participants.
