Sunfish species like redear, redbreast, bluegill and longear spawn in colonies that consist of several dozen circular-shaped beds in a relatively small area. Sunfish, also called “bream,” like to spawn in areas with sand or gravel bottoms, usually in close proximity to some form of cover. Spawning takes place in late spring through summer at water depths as shallow as two feet to as deep as 15 feet in really clear water. COURTESY PHOTO / MATT WILLIAMS
