Area basketball teams are closing in on playoff berths as the second season gets set to begin. The Mount Pleasant Lady Tigers (29-0) have almost clinched a district championship by virtue of their sweep of Tyler High and Tyler’s sweep of Longview.

Buzzer heave just short, Hawks fall to Chargers

The CHAAMP Hawks Varsity boys basketball team traveled to Longview Thursday night for an NTAA District rivalry matchup with the ETHS Chargers. The contest was the Chargers Senior Night game and emotions were high on both sides. The Hawks (15-5) couldn’t quite knock off the Chargers (19-6) in their house, falling 63-60 in a barnburner of a game.

Tigers take down Texas High 67-45 as Morris matches career high

After a two-day weather delay, the Mount Pleasant Tigers didn’t miss a beat as they took care of business at home early Thursday evening. Kelcey Morris matched his career high of 23 points, the third time he’s reached that mark this season as the Tigers maintained their unblemished record on the season.

Lady Rebels extend win streak to 7; Rebels win on Williams’ late shot

In the third game of a three-game homestand, the Rivercrest Rebels and Lady Rebels both continued their recent hot streaks. Welcoming Maud to town Friday, the Lady Rebels officially clinched a playoff berth and inched another step closer to a district title, remaining undefeated in the district schedule and extending their win streak to seven straight with a 57-20 win over the Lady Cardinals.

Tigers escape Hallsville 46-44, set win streak record

The Mount Pleasant Tigers needed every second of the game to vacate Hallsville with a win on Friday setting a new all-time win streak record at 28 straight games. After a quadruple overtime buzzer beating loss at Hallsville last season, more theatrics were on display late in the game this year as well, as the Bobcats hot shooting kept the game close throughout. The Tigers were able to knock down some key free throws late and had just enough in the tank to secure the victory.

MPHS Powerlifting competes in Lindale

The Mount Pleasant High School Tiger Powerlifters opened their season on Thursday, January 19 in Lindale while the Lady Tigers were seeing action for the second time this year. The Lady Tigers closed out the night with a 2nd place finish as a team with the Tigers placing 6th. Multiple lifters placed in the top 5 within their respective weight classes, earning points for their teams and medals as individuals.
