Rivercrest softball falls in area round series against Frankston

Two towns got the opportunities to see that the future of softball at their respective schools is bright in an area round matchup this week at Winnsboro’s Ballpark at Raiderland. The Rivercrest Lady Rebels, a team with just three seniors, took on the Frankston Maidens, a team with just as much youth, in their best of three area round series.

The 3rd Annual “The Op Masters” catfish tournament held in late April on Sam Rayburn Reservoir drew 58 teams, and several found the fat cats biting. Teams were limited to four people and were allowed to catch fish using any legal means or method for catfish — trotline, bank poles, rod/reel, limb lines, etc… Founded by John and Maegan Coats, the derby is named after Coats’ late father, Tom, who passed away in 2016 after a battle with cancer.

Down 2-0 in their bi-district round matchup against Linden-Kildare in Paris Thursday, Rivercrest head coach Kara Crawford and assistant coach Sara Beth Spencer repeated just three words at the start of every inning – “Whatever it takes.”

Brahmas Hodges, Johnson fly to state track meet

Two of Pewitt’s high flyers will get a chance to soar at the state track meet in Austin May 11-13 – one for the second time in as many years. Senior pole vaulter Isaac Hodges and junior long jumper Junie Johnson both qualified to the state track meet after finishing in the top two at the regional track meet, held over the weekend at Whitehouse High School.

In a tough 5A Region II, the Mount Pleasant track teams put up a solid showing at this past weekend’s regional track meet, held at the University of Texas-Arlington. Senior Xavier Hills just missed a state berth in the triple jump, finishing third with a jump of 45-6.25.
