Mount Pleasant ISD adopts lowest tax rate since the 1980s

At their regular meeting Monday night, the MPISD Board of Trustees voted to reduce the current tax rate from $1.1592 to .8952 for the coming year, the lowest tax rate in more than 30 years. The total tax rate, a reduction of $.264, includes $.6692 for maintenance and operations (M&O) and $0.226 for interest and sinking (I&S).

NTCC soccer teams drop home opener

Abernathy, Young to speak at the annual Northeast Texas Poetry Contest

The annual Northeast Texas Poetry Reading on Friday, 8 September at 11 AM will again occur at the Foyer of the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts on the Northeast Texas Community College campus. The public is invited for this free event, the sixteenth of its kind in as many years. As before, the Reading will feature the six readings of the highest ranked poems of the adult and student divisions, and a presentation of winning Northeast Texas images. This year, two speakers also will share their perceptions of our region, Pittsburg Mayor David Abernathy, and the NTCC Dean of Workforce, Dr. Miles Young.

City council approves burn ban extension amid drought

The Mount Pleasant City Council approved an extension on the city’s burn ban Tuesday night. “The way the state law is written, the mayor or a county judge can institute a disaster declaration, but it can only last seven days,” Mount Pleasant Fire Department Chief Larry McRae said.
