We presented a two-hour program on “Trees, Tree Selection, and Tree Care” in July at the Titus County AgriLife Extension Summer Horticulture Series. We requested and received many questions during the program, and we think these are questions that you, our northeast Texas neighbors, might ask.

MPISD to serve free breakfast, lunches

The Mount Pleasant Independent School District announced it will operate the Community Eligibility Program (CEP) under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program at all of the district campuses for the 2023-2024 school year.
American National Bank surprised each of the new teachers at Mount Pleasant ISD with a $100 grant to help them set up their new classrooms. Sheila Donnelly, American National Bank President, presented $4400 from the bank to the MPISD Education Foundation and each new teacher received a $100 check at the annual MPISD Convocation. The first day of school for Mount Pleasant ISD was Wednesday, Aug.16.

Caps off

Northeast Texas Community College celebrated its August 2023 commencement on Friday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Whatley Center. There were 95 total graduates (not all were in attendance) who received 69 degrees and 50 certificates of competency.

Area entrepreneur plans documentary featuring Friday Night Lights

Kaymon Farmer, Pittsburg native and Director of Student Development and Inclusion at Northeast Texas Community College, is filming a documentary showcasing the East Texas-ness of the communities he calls home and it centers around something near and dear to his heart--Friday Night Football.

Crime & Courts

There are 153 inmates in jail with 134 males and 19 females. Since Aug. 10, the following have been booked into the jail: Aug. 11 Trevor J. Newman, 23 of Mt. Pleasant, was arrested on a Probation Commitment Order. Aug. 14 Kody L.

Red River Quilters annual show coming up in September

The Red River Quilters Annual Quilt Show will be judged by Sandy Gard of Edmond, Okla. and Shawn Sickle of Richardson, Texas, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9.
