Firefighter Academy accepting applications for 2023

The Northeast Texas Community College Continuing Education Department is now accepting applications for the 2023 Firefighter Academy. Classes begin January 17th, 2023 and will be held at the Mount Pleasant Central Fire Station. The program meets on evenings during the week and on alternating Saturdays.

Telford Prison Ministries gearing up for another Christmas

The volunteers out at the Telford Unit in New Boston are hard at work again to provide some much-needed Christmas cheer for the inmates housed at the facility. Again this year, close to 2,000 men will receive a holiday gift filled with candy that has been donated from around the county, just in time for Christmas. The bags will contain individually wrapped candy of any kind, except gum.

MPHS Career Preparation class tours Lowe’s

The Mount Pleasant High School Career Preparation class completed their job application unit by touring the Lowe’s Distribution Center in Mount Vernon on November 17, 2022. During class, students chose a job from Lowe’s, typed a cover letter, resume, personal references, and completed a handwritten application. While at Lowe’s, the students learned about the opportunities offered through their company, toured the facility, participated in a mock interview, and took part in an activity that not only enhanced teamwork but efficiency also. All students left with prizes and a better understanding of the everyday operations at Lowe’s. The team conducting the tour was led by Regional General Manager, Tracey Reed. Career Preparation is taught by Jackie Scoggins.

Martha Laird Chapter, NSDAR 80th Anniversary Celebration

The Daughters of the Martha Laird Chapter, NSDAR in Mount Pleasant had a wonderful time celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Chapter’s founding at the meeting on Saturday, November 12. The program included a re-enactment of the organizing meeting with a skit written by Recording Secretary Yvonne Hampton and performed in period dress by the Martha Laird Players. District VI Director Tamara Moler created a PowerPoint presentation of 1940s dress, magazine and newspaper ads, and photos of Mount Pleasant during that time. Registrar Linda Cady made a Patriot Tree with the names of every patriot represented by the Chapter. Barbara Caldwell shared family heirlooms belonging to two of the founding members, Zenobia Lide and Bessie Caldwell.

Imports and exports in U.S. beef industry

In 2021, United States beef exports reached a new record of 3.4 billion pounds. This was a 1 percent increase from 2020, largely because of the fourfold increase in export to China which grew from just over 100 million pounds in 2020 to 540 million pounds in 2021.
