21 members of the Mount Pleasant ISD Future Business Leaders of America middle level, grades fifth through eighth, competed at the National Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia from June 25 to June 30, with one member named a national finalist.

New law makes changes to AMBER Alert system

Newly signed legislation is making changes to the existing AMBER Alert system to allow local area activation under certain conditions. Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed HB 3556 into law on June 13, and the law immediately took effect.

Chamber event a ringing success

It was a warm, sunny day at the fair grounds Saturday as hundreds of people gathered to celebrate Independence Day at Happy Birthday USA, an annual event hosted by the Mount Pleasant - Titus County Chamber of Commerce.

Weevils make positive impacts in Giant Salvinia management

AUSTIN – Giant salvinia is a destructive, invasive, free-floating aquatic fern that poses a major threat to Texas lakes. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) implements an integrated pest management strategy to control giant salvinia and other aquatic invasive vegetation. Biological controls, like giant salvinia weevils, are one of the tools in the management effort, and biologists are encouraged by some recent discoveries.

NTCC closed Tuesday

Northeast Texas Community College will be closed on Tuesday, July 4 in observance of the Independence Day holiday. The college will be open regular hours on Monday and Wednesday-Friday.

Wardens urge water, boating safety during July 4 weekend

Across the state, folks are making plans for barbeques and relaxing days on lakes, rivers and the Texas coast to celebrate the Fourth of July. Before taking a dip, Texas Game Wardens urge everyone spending time in the water to remember to follow basic safety precautions while on the water.
