As dominant as the Tigers have been over the past several years, Sulphur Springs has always been a hostile and unfriendly environment. The last time the Tigers won in the district rival’s own gym was four years ago almost to the day, but in this night, the Tigers would not be denied. Mount Pleasant would need overtime to take down the Wildcats who hit a floater at the end of regulation to send the game into the extra period. However, Tiger forward Xzavier Brown would make the final statement with a crushing three from the corner that sent the whole gym into a frenzy and sending the Tigers home with the win, 44-41.
The Lady Tiger Volleyball squad had three players qualify for the Academic All-State team this year. To qualify, players must be a graduating senior, maintain at least a 94 average throughout high school, and be of good moral character. Seniors Ashlynn Brooks, Joselynn Smith, and Jaycee Woods all met these qualifications and represented Mount Pleasant well on the court and in the classroom.
The Chapel Hill Red Devils remain undefeated in district play after their 57-38 win at Mt Vernon this past Friday. The Red Devils have been road warriors all season and this past Friday was no exception. The first quarter saw a tight contest as each team traded baskets. In the end the Red Devils had one more basket to take the early game lead 12-10 and it was all Chapel Hill from there. The second quarter the Red Devils made a better push on the defensive side of the ball keeping Mt Vernon from many good looks at the basket. The Red Devils once again won the quarter 15-10 to advance their already existing lead at half-time to 27-20.
On Monday night, we faced off against Detroit in a rescheduled game from earlier in the season. The team has worked extremely hard the past 3 weeks and tonight we finally got the W we have been trying so hard to earn. All these young ladies committed for 4 quarters and gave all they had on the floor. We have plenty to correct just like in any game, but nothing makes me prouder than seeing these girls work to earn the win. Lauren Hardman continues to make her presence known inside on both ends of the floor, while Freshman Anna Duvall keeps providing solid defense and hustle off the bench. Alexis Case and Macy Childres keep improving each game and have provided a spark in the last several games.
