Communities in Schools working to meet the needs of Northeast Texas school children

With all of our area schools well underway on a new school year, the need to take care of students across the area is hard to miss. Things like school supplies, clothing and simple hygiene products are always needed to help make the days just a little bit easier. In a county like Titus County, where 20.8 percent, or roughly one in five live below the poverty line, simple things can become a challenge for school aged children.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year between September 15 to October 15 people observe and celebrate the unique histories, contributions and cultural influences of Hispanics. Hispanic people are those who hail or whose ancestors hail from South America, Central America, Mexico, Spain, and areas of the Caribbean. Throughout early autumn, Hispanic culture and history is celebrated. The dates of Hispanic Heritage Month is significant because it includes the anniversaries of independence for various Latin American countries. September 15 marks when Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua achieved independence. The first official Hispanic heritage commemoration was observed in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week. It was expanded in 1988 under then-president Ronald Regan to encompass a full month.

The Child Development Center in Mt. Pleasant is now accepting applications for the 2022-2023 school year. The CDC serves children 0-5 years old in high quality preschool classrooms, as well as pregnant mothers. Please stop by the Child Development Center at 1602 West Ferguson Road to pick up an application and make an appointment. Applications may also be printed at www. mpisd.net/cdc/. The CDC serves Titus County children from 6:30 am-5:30 am Monday-Friday.

Serve Mount Pleasant Day

Volunteers came together last Saturday for Serve Mount Pleasant Day. They cleaned and painted Dellwood Park ,Heritage Park as well as Edwards Park and did a little gardening at the Public Library. The Chamber sent out thanks to Pilgrim’s for sponsoring the day and to the City of Mount Pleasant for providing supplies and support.

This is the purpose, with a heavy dose of plain fun and enjoyment, of a community festival; and it is this that Pioneer Days in Pittsburg hopes to achieve. Dating back to Spanish rule, counties in Texas—of which there were originally 23 in the southeastern area of the state—were called municipios.

MPHS students earn awards from College Board National Recognition Programs

Ten Mount Pleasant High School students have earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs. Those earning the National Rural and Small Town award include Reese Ball, Vanessajane Bayna, Jenna Cook, Natalie Crockett, Karli Hill, Camdon Johnson, Nathaniel Martinez, and Amy Vazquez. Earning the National Hispanic Recognition award were Ana Garrett, Nancy Netro, Crockett, Martinez, and Vazquez.

Long prized for their pelts and found from Alaska to northern Mexico, beavers from the northern and central areas of the continent have been utilized for the making of coats and hats.

Poll: Most Texas teachers consider quitting

More than three-fourths of Texas teachers say they have seriously considered quitting the profession largely because of a perceived lack of respect and support, according to a new survey by the Charles Butt Foundation. Excessive workload and inadequate pay were other major reasons that teachers are considering leaving, The Dallas Morning News and other media outlets reported.
