The non-district schedule is usually designed to do one of two things – provide confidence going into the season or give a team stern tests going into the slate.

Sometimes, a non-district game can do both. The Pewitt Brahmas opened their season at the recently opened Rugged Red Stadium in Winnsboro against a strong Red Raider squad. In the first half, Winnsboro used their fast-paced no-huddle offense to keep the Brahmas off their guard and jumped out to a big lead at the half.

While it was a little too late to complete the comeback, the Brahmas bounced back and played Winnsboro tough in the second half to provide confidence in the midst of what will be a challenging non-district slate.

The Brahmas fell to the Raiders, 51-29, in the season opener Friday.

Winnsboro jumped out to a 17-0 lead, but Pewitt gained some momentum when a Raider drive in Brahma territory was snuffed out after a fumble caused by Gage Smith and recovered by Jasean Cato.

The Brahmas got on the board when running back KD Watson threw a touchdown pass to Smith to cut into the Raider lead.

Hayden Green powered his way in from nine yards out in the third quarter and threw a 26-yard touchdown later in the frame, caught by Smith for his second score of the night.

Junie Johnson concluded the scoring with a 41-yard scamper in the fourth quarter.

Pewitt finished with 159 rushing yards and 47 passing yards for the game.

The Brahmas will hit the road for the second week in a row when they travel to Waskom to take on the Wildcats Friday evening.

Waskom won their season opener 36-10 over Redwater. The Wildcats outscored the Dragons 22-7 in the first quarter and finished the game on a 14-0 run.

Chris Stafford scored twice for the Wildcats and quarterback Caden Edwards threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Lamontre Stephens. Tesean Hamilton added three two-point conversions.

Redwater did have some success passing on the Wildcats and forced two fumbles – one of which was returned for a touchdown. Waskom’s Diego Smith also returned a fumble for a score.

Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Waskom’s Jimmy E. Cox Stadium.
