A dream of several educators and Mount Pleasant community members has finally come to fruition with the creation of the Lady Tiger Uproar program this Spring. The organization led by President Crystal Jackson and Vice President Crystal Freeman are excited to present the opportunity for young girls to be able to compete at a higher level on and off the court.

“The mission is the prepare our youth for the junior high, high school, and possibly collegiate level by teaching them the basics of basketball along with strength and conditioning, “ said Jackson. “We have selected 20 girls from Mount Pleasant only that have shown an interest in basketball over the last couple of years.” The program has also partnered with Lions Head CrossFit to provide training on a weekly basis.

Players will be instructed by current and former coaches including Judd Marshall, MPISD Superintendent and former MPHS girls’ basketball coach, along with the current basketball coaching staff of Tina Carrillo, Billy Farrier, and Keith Shelton. Coaches, parents, and players were required to sign contracts to show their level of commitment, work ethic, and expectations. “Our goal is to provide an instructive environment to the players as well as fielding competitive teams that will enjoy success locally and regionally, “ continued Jackson who played basketball at Sam Houston State. “The experience gained through this summer program will last a lifetime and these young ladies will possess a feeling of accomplishment as they grow through junior high, high school, and college.”

The Lady Tiger Uproar program will run June 1 through June 30 and is designed for 8–12-year-old girls. Once the athlete graduates and enters junior high, she will be expected to assist in developing the younger players taking their spot in the program. All players will be eligible scholarships when they graduate high school as long as they complete the summer program.

Several local businesses and social clubs have already show support for the program but the Lady Tiger Uproar program is still looking for assistance in the future. The cost of the program is $50 for each player which covers gear, access to training facilities, and eventual travel and tournament costs. The organization has already established non-profit status and is accepting donations at any time.
