Every football team wants to start its season undefeated. They’d all love to finish undefeated, as well. Usually, a team will suffer its bumps and bruises along the way. At that point, it’s all in how a team bounces back from its setbacks.
For the Pewitt Brahmas, they understand that they have played a tough schedule to this point. They may not be undefeated, but they’re not deterred. A few losses early in the season are better than district losses that keep a team out of the playoffs.
“Competition-wise, we have a tough district we’re about to face, so playing teams like Celina, Mount Vernon and Winnsboro helps us prepare for that,” Coach Dorsey said. “That’s something we needed before we start district.”
That start comes Friday as the Brahmas travel for a test Friday against one of last year’s co-district champions on the road at Hooks.
The Brahmas had their bye week at the start of district play. It gets no easier in the following weeks as the Brahmas will welcome the district’s only currently undefeated team when they take on Chisum. The gauntlet continues on the road at DeKalb, who provided Daingerfield with a solid test Friday. Speaking of the Tigers, the week after the DeKalb game is the Battle of Morris County. The regular season concludes with a trip to Prairiland and a home date against Redwater.
In the district’s opening games Friday, Daingerfield held off DeKalb, 20-15. Hooks rolled past Redwater, 28-6 and Chisum won over Prairiland, 33-21.
Hooks took a 21-6 lead over Redwater by halftime and the Hornet defense pressured the Dragons all night, forcing the Dragons into four interceptions. Redwater’s lone score came through the air on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Malcolm Brown to Serlio Creer in the first quarter.
Keyshawn Wells rushed for 152 yards for the Hornets as Hooks finished with 248 yards on the ground. Jalen Woodside finished 5-12 for 68 yards with a touchdown and an interception and Traveon Jones was Hooks’ leading receiver with 35 yards and a touchdown. Jatavious Johnson and Carveion Johnson both came up with an interception as Hooks forced a total of five turnovers.
In other district games, Prairiland travels to DeKalb and Chisum hosts Redwater. Daingerfield is off this week.
