It most certainly has not been the season the Pewitt Brahmas expected on the gridiron. A team that is used to creating its own history now must work to finish strong to prevent setting a record it does not want.

According to local news magnate Morris Craig, no Brahma team has ever finished a season winless. Pewitt has finished 1-9 three times – in 1951, 1958 and 1975 – but never a winless season. The Brahmas are still looking for their first win of 2022.

Despite that, the Brahmas could help their own cause and put tiebreakers into effect with wins in their final two games.

The playoff race in District 10-3A Div. II is nearing a conclusion – the winner of Friday’s Hooks-DeKalb game will claim the district title. New Boston could clinch second if Hooks loses Friday and the Lions beat the Hornets in their finale. The final spot comes down to Prairiland and Redwater. The Dragons are off this week and finish the season at DeKalb. The Patriots need to beat Pewitt to claim the final spot, since the Patriots defeated the Dragons earlier in the season. Redwater’s bye is this week; Prairiland’s is next week.

There is a chance of a three-way tie for the final playoff spot, but Pewitt needs to win both its final games and needs Redwater to lose their finale to DeKalb.

That scenario would put the Brahmas, Dragons and Patriots all at 2-4 in district play with Redwater having beaten Pewitt, Prairiland having beaten Redwater and Pewitt having beaten Prairiland, necessitating tiebreaker procedures. Pewitt is the district’s fourth highest scoring team in district play and the third highest scoring team overall, but have allowed the second most points in district play, behind Prairiland, and the most overall.

The Patriots scored first in their matchup against New Boston last week, but two 21-0 runs helped push the Lions past Prairiland, 56-20. The Lions scored 21 consecutive points in the first quarter and finished the game on a second 21-0 run in the third quarter. New Boston returned an interception and a fumble for a touchdown and rushed for six touchdowns against the Patriots.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Brahma Stadium.
