Editor’s note: A letter to the editor from eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon earned a quick response in the form of an unsigned editorial published Sept. 21, 1897. Veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church wrote the piece that has since become the most reprinted newspaper editorial in history.
