Human Trafficking: Not just a metropolitan issue

Alone. Lost. Frightened.

Imagine you go out for a night of fun with your friends. You all leave and go your separate ways. SUDDENLY, someone grabs you from behind. You wake up in the back of a vehicle, with a complete stranger. You feel nauseous and disorientated.

The car comes to a complete stop and you take this opportunity to escape. You have no money and no phone, so you lock yourself in a public bathroom. Who can help you?

First responders transport you to the local hospital, but you are so afraid that you can barely mumble your name. The hospital staff earns your trust, enters your name into their EPIC Medical Records system and you allow them to contact your family. You’ve been missing…. You are a victim of human trafficking.

In 2019, there were 11,500 cases of human trafficking reported in the United States alone. That’s more than 25 cases a DAY. Here at Titus Regional, we utilize EPIC, a healthcare software that holds medical records of 54% of the U.S. population.

Human Trafficking is not just a metropolitan issue, stories such as these happen right here in Northeast Texas. With the help of the first responders, counselors, medical staff, and the usage of EPIC, TRMC is joining in the fight to end Human Trafficking.
