It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Nancy Freeman Carney, 68, of Mount Pleasant, Texas. She passed away on Friday, March 29, 2024. Nancy was born on January 22, 1956, to E.H. Freeman and Glynn Bankhead Freeman. She was a 1974 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School and was a proud 1978 graduate of Baylor University. Nancy committed her life to serving others and making the world a better place.

Nancy was a loving mother and grandmother who poured her heart into raising her children and grandchildren in a home filled with love and laughter. Her wisdom, altruism, deep faith, untamed humor, and unconditional love nurtured her family, leaving an everlasting imprint on their hearts.

As a teacher, Nancy inspired generations of students. Over a span of 29 years, Nancy taught in Arlington ISD, Pine Tree ISD, and Mount Pleasant ISD, where she completed her career in education teaching sixth grade science at P. E. Wallace Middle School. Her compassion and commitment to her students went beyond the classroom as she positively impacted each of her students’ lives by helping students with after school activities and encouraging students throughout each day. She was everyone’s favorite teacher.

Beyond her family and career, Nancy exemplified the values of kindness, compassion, and service to her community. She was an active participant in local civics, a true friend to many, and she was a member of First Baptist Church, where she raised her children and taught them her faith. Nancy was a modern-day St. Francis of Assisi in her love and care for animals, which was a life-long service she performed. Nancy helped to establish and operate a nonprofit volunteer-run animal rescue, Northeast Texas Rescue Organization. Her selfless acts and unwavering dedication led to countless animals’ lives saved through adoptions into forever homes.

Nancy is preceded in death by her parents, E. H. Freeman and Glynn Bankhead Freeman; her brother, James William Freeman; her aunt and uncle, Gladys and James Grimsley; her uncle, Wayne Thomas Bankhead; and her aunt, Mary Kyle Hill. Nancy is survived by her children, son and daughter-in-law, Kyle and Zoë Carney of Fort Worth, Texas, and daughter and son-in-law, Tara and Bryan Francis of Anna, Texas; her grandchildren, Robert Carney and Eleanor Carney of Fort Worth, Texas; her cousin, Thomas Bankhead of Longview, Texas. And she is survived by her other family members, Larry and Jerene Sarratt of Mount Pleasant, Texas, and their children, Hillary Sarratt Scharlach and Nick Sarratt.

A memorial service is scheduled on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Northeast Texas Rescue Organization, Kitty Cove Rescue, or another charity of your choice in honor of Nancy. May her legacy continue to inspire acts of kindness and love for generations to come.
