Martha Carolyn Clay Dungan

Martha Carolyn Clay Dungan, educator, wife, mother and grandmother, and friend to many, passed away on February 14 at UT Health Center Hospital in Tyler.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 19, at Tennison Memorial United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tommy Earl Burton presiding. Visitation will be in the Sanctuary from 1:00 to 1:45 PM prior to the service. Graveside service following the church service will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park on US 67 west of Mount Pleasant

Carolyn was born September 4, 1945, in Paris, Texas, to Weldon and Martha Langford Clay, and was the oldest of four children. She grew up in Mount Pleasant and graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1963. She earned her bachelor’s degree at East Texas State University in 1967 and later earned her master’s degree in education at Stephen F. Austin in 1977.

Her educational journey began with elementary grades 1 through 8 and continued as she shaped young minds in provisional vocational home economics for grades 6 through 12. She then became a professional mid-management administrator in education, and later became a consultant for Region 7 Education Service Center, where she reached out to 96 school districts and shared current trends and issues facing Texas educators.

Having grown up in Tennison Memorial Methodist Church, Carolyn with her husband Randy Dungan, returned to Tennison as an adult and served on numerous committees and assisted in various projects.

She was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class.

Active in numerous clubs and activities in Mount Pleasant, Carolyn was a member and past president of The Kroweldeen Club, and was a member and held offices in the Junior Delphian Club, Retired Teachers Association, and the Fine Arts Club. She was also a Master Gardner.

After retirement, Carolyn and Randy enjoyed traveling, with a favorite trip being to Italy. Carolyn continued traveling with girl friends as well after Randy’s death and especially enjoyed a week in Maine.

Carolyn spent time with friends playing Bridge and Shanghai each month, and she was delighted to have her granddaughter Katlyn spend a school year with her and Randy while Katyln’s parents were both deployed with the Navy.

Carolyn always came home to her faithful little friend and companion yorkie Buster.

The family wishes to express their love and appreciation to Carolyn’s dear friend Sue Hall who gave so much of her time on Carolyn’s behalf.

She was preceded in death by her husband Randy Dungan, by her parents, her beloved son Jeffery Allen Farrer, and brothers Allen Clay and Larry Clay, and stepson Nolan Dungan.

Carolyn is survived by her son Jonathan Scott Farrer of Virginia Beach, Virginia, brother Jerry Clay and stepson Peter Dungan of Mount Pleasant, and grandchildren Katlyn Farrer, Taryn Dungan, Tatum Dungan, Taylor Dungan, Brittany Myers, and great grandson Carter Rogers and numerous nieces and nephews.
