Evelyn June Joyner Johnson

Evelyn June Joyner Johnson was born in Omaha, Texas on January 13, 1931, to Hiram and Mary Sue Joyner. She passed from this life in Mt. Pleasant, Texas on Friday, September 1, 2023, at the age of 92.

June and James Johnson were married on October 7, 1949.

They were married for 72 years until James’ death in 2021. June was a devoted wife and true help meet for James.

After his stroke in 2005, she lovingly cared for him at home for many years until she could no longer do so. They were longtime, faithful members of the Southside Church of Christ in Mt. Pleasant.

June worked as a telephone operator for 18 years, and she worked in the Tax Assessor and Collector’s office in the Titus County Courthouse for many years.

Her greatest work, however, was being a loving mother to four children and a very special Gran to 8 grandchildren and spouses and 19 great-grandchildren. She was an excellent cook and always tried to cater to the favorites of her family. She fed many people in her lifetime including family, friends, the sick and grieving of the congregation, and many different preachers.

June is survived by her children, Jerry and Linda Johnson, Rodney and Janet Johnson, Kendall and Debbie Johnson, and Angela and Eddie Whitaker. She is also survived by grandchildren, Josh and Kris Johnson, Brent and Allison Johnson, Kasey and Nate Diestelkamp, Jessie and Matt Browning, Justin and Bethany Whitaker, Holly and Eric Opperman, Jared and Kalyn Johnson, as well as her 19 great-grandchildren; sister Sylvia Harrison, brother Fred Joyner, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter Hilary Johnson, and her siblings, Mary Frances Saunders, Dorothy (Dot) Hamilton, James (Sonny) Joyner, and Wiley Joyner.

Visitation with the family will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at the Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at the Southside Church of Christ with interment to follow at the Mt. Vernon City Cemetery.
