Harry Glen “Butch” Hammonds, of Mt Pleasant, passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at his home surrounded by family and friends. He was born on November 25, 1946, to Harry Thomas and Edith Aileen Johnson Hammonds in Mt. Pleasant, Texas. Butch was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church.
Butch retired after many years from Texas Utilities as a crosspit spreader operator, but he also had several other occupations during his life, including rodeo bull riding, truck driver, baseball umpire, and a funeral director. He and Pansy were also very active in the square dance community, owning and operating The Promenade Shop (costumes and accessories for square dancers) as well as serving on the national boards and traveling across the country many times to attend the national conventions. They also enjoyed attending the Gospel Quartet Conventions.
He is survived by his siblings, sister Gayle Boase of Mt Pleasant; brother, Henry Hammonds and wife Blenda of Mt Pleasant; sister, Louise Fudge and husband Don of Omaha; brother, David Hammonds of Mt Pleasant, and numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Thomas and Aileen Hammonds; and his wife, Pansy Hammonds.
The family would like to thank Chambers Hospice for their care and comfort, especially Linda, Becky, and Rikki.
A funeral service will be held at Bates- Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home in Mt Pleasant on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be one hour prior service. (10:00-11:00 AM) Bro. Buddy Blue, Bro. Ross Bond and Bro. Tony Lawson will be officiating. A burial will follow at Gladewater Cemetery.
