LEBSACK

Dorothy Zane Covey Lebsack passed away on September 11, 2021 at the age of 90. She was born November 9, 1930 on the same farm on which her father was born. The second child of Hull and Pauline Duncan Covey, she was born on the family farm in Titus County, northeast of Mt. Pleasant. Her siblings are Margaret Covey Baker and Edward Hilton Covey.

Zane attended the Oak Grove School and graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1948. She moved to Fort Worth to attend Brantley Draughon Business College while working at the Fort Worth Stockyards and for James Cathey Western Photography.

While living in Ft. Worth, Zane met U.S. Air Force Airman Victor Lebsack. They married on September 2, 1950. During Zane and Victor’s military years, she crossed the Atlantic four times and the family moved twenty-six times. Zane and the children lived in Mt. Pleasant while Victor served in the Vietnam War. After Victor’s retirement from the Air Force in 1970, the family moved back to Titus County to live on the farm where Zane’s mother was born.

Zane traveled extensively throughout the United States during her lifetime. She visited every state except Maine and Hawaii. She would bring large rocks home from the many places she visited to border her flower gardens.

She fed cattle and pigs, raked hay, planted a large garden, and harvested pecans from the family orchard. She canned fruits, vegetables, jelly, and hot sauce. Her freezer was filled with home-raised beef, pork, and vegetables. She baked the family’s bread for more than forty years.

She enjoyed ceramics, oil painting, calligraphy, and crossword puzzles. She sewed her daughter’s wedding dress, her son’s shirts and coats, and many other items of clothing for her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Zane enjoyed crocheting and quilting. She made a quilt for each grandchild. Her evenings were often spent shelling peas or snapping green beans, cracking pecans, crossword puzzles, and creating hundreds of Christmas ornaments and book markers.

Zane was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years Victor, parents Edward Hull Covey and Pauline Duncan Covey, sister Margaret and husband Woodrow Baker, her favorite son-in-law Jerry Lewellen, husband of daughter Sally, and beloved daughter-in-law Laura Lebsack, wife of Kenneth Lebsack.

She is survived by her six children and their spouses; Dwight and Sue Lebsack, Sally Lewellen, Scott and Lisa Lebsack, Warren Keith Lebsack and Edward Donel, Kenneth Lebsack, and Tim and Karel Lebsack. Zane is survived by nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Hilton Covey and wife Frances, and many nieces and nephews.
