This 1914 season ticket to the Northeast Texas State Fair belonged to Mary Lou Pitts Abernathy (1863-1950). Mrs. Abernathy was the niece of Pittsburg’s founder, Major W.H. Pitts. The wife of pioneer Pittsburg merchant D.H. Abernathy, she lived in the magnificent Queen Anne Victorian house on the corner of Quitman St. and South Texas St., presently occupied by her grandson, Pittsburg Mayor D.H. Abernathy and his wife Laverne.

Of course, all history begins with a pioneer; because for every venture, there had to be someone who was willing to pioneer into the unknown. But just as every pioneer is unique, so also are the ventures that they pursue, and the events that can grow out of those ventures.
Camp County was once a venture that began in the 1830’s.
