Samuel Wallace Dunwoody Jr., 99, of Mount Pleasant, Texas, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026.
He was born August 1, 1926, in Tyler, Texas, to Samuel Wallace Dunwoody and Ola May Mathis Dunwoody.
He served in the United States Army during the final years of World War II.
Sam married Fay Nellicele (“Nell”) Newman Dunwoody, and they shared 68 years of marriage until her passing in 2016. They made their home in Tyler and Mount Pleasant.
He was known for his entrepreneurial spirit, deep voice, easygoing nature, and love of sharing jokes and colorful stories.
He is survived by his sister, Hollice Gale Dunwoody Inman; his grandchildren, Samuel Wallace Dunwoody IV of Dallas and Amy Solberg of Austin; his great-granddaughters, Emerson (“Emmy”) Dunwoody, Lilian (“Lily”) Dunwoody, and Greta Solberg; and numerous other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nell; his son, Samuel Wallace Dunwoody III; his brother, Joe Dwayne Dunwoody; and his sisters, May Lenis Dunwoody Barton, Constance (“Connie”) Dunwoody Wilkinson, LaVelle Dunwoody Fender, and Marjorie Dunwoody McGuire.
Sam was laid to rest at Gladewater Cemetery in Mount Pleasant on Saturday, February 7, 2026.
