Ira Chester Covington passed away peacefully on February 14, 2025, in Fort Worth, Texas, at the age of 83. After a courageous battle with Parkinson’s, he found rest, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on January 5, 1942, in De-Queen, Arkansas, Ira grew up in Nash, Texas, where the values of hard work, kindness, and integrity shaped his life. In 1977, he moved to Mount Pleasant, where he dedicated many years of service as a Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper. His devotion to protecting and serving his community was matched only by his deep love for his family.
Ira never met a stranger. With a warm smile and a heart full of kindness, he had a way of making everyone feel welcome. His generosity, humor, and unwavering love left a lasting imprint on all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a man who believed in good conversation, a firm handshake, and the importance of always looking out for others.
Above all else, Ira was a devoted family man. He treasured every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, finding immense joy in their laughter and love.
Ira was preceded in death by his parents, John Riley and Eva Lee Covington, his sister, Ella Bonner, and his step-son, Scott Wynn. He is survived by his wife of over 30 years- Sherri, his loving children, Mona Covington Woodard (Terry Woodard), Jeff Covington, Brandon Covington, and Lauren Covington Greene (Dustin Greene). He was a proud grandfather and Pappa C to Melody Sanders (Tyler Sanders), Coby and Aiden Wynn, and Dylan, Camden, and Judge Greene, and a doting great-grandfather to Luke Sanders.
Though Ira is no longer with us, his spirit, love, and unwavering kindness will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched. His memory will live on in the stories shared, the lessons passed down, and the love he so freely gave.
A memorial service to honor Ira’s life will be announced at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in his memory.
Ira’s journey on this earth may have ended, but his love will continue to guide and inspire us always. Rest easy, Ira—you are deeply loved and dearly missed.
