My journey to the streets included a glimpse of a friendship I never wanted to take for granted, especially when this person offered me wisdom for walking out my life journey. I was driving my car from a spot after visiting some of my homeless friends near downtown, and I hoped to find someone else to talk with before going home.

Ruby+Begonia opens the doors of its new location

With a snip, the red ribbon fell and the new location for Ruby+Begonia was officially opened. The owner, Sabrina Vaseleck, wiped tears of joy as she addressed the people in the store, many of them a close friend or family member who supports her, “I truly am thankful for each and every one of you.” Vaseleck has been creating luxury soaps, lotions, bath bombs, and more after her mother passed away from cancer.

MPHS UIL teams compete in last meets before district

Four of the Mount Pleasant High School UIL Academic teams competed last weekend in a final push before the district meet. The UIL Spelling, Current Events, and Ready Writing teams headed to Carthage while the UIL Math and Calculator Application teams spent the weekend in San Antonio at the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association State Meet. In Carthage, the Spelling team of Sophie Greco, Brissia Alvarez, Karen Hernandez, and Jenny Luna placed first as a team. The Literary Criticism team of Luna, Alvarez, Natalia Aspeitia, Chelsea Mendoza, and Abril Figueroa also placed first as a team. And in Ready Writing, the State Director ranked all three MPHS competitors in the top 6 and awarded MPHS senior, Makayla Spigner, the Distinguished Writer award for being the top writer out of all the schools, both large and small.

Mount Pleasant High School Goin’ Gold Band earns Sweepstakes

The Mount Pleasant High School Goin’ Gold Band earned a sweepstakes rating at the UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest held on March 27 in the Mount Pleasant High School Performing Arts Complex. The band played 3 pieces on stage including Big Cage March by King, Benediction by Stevens, and Danse Perpetuo by Nitsch and received all 1’s from the judges. From the stage performance they moved to the band hall they sight read and received all 1’s as well. The stage and sight reading ratings combined with their marching ratings from earlier in the year gave them a Sweepstakes award for the 2024 year. The Goin’ Gold band is directed by Dr. Theodus Luckett III, Karen Luckett, Jamey Sterrett, Alicia Hargett, Brian Bass, and Sheri Sullivan.

Chick-Fil-A awards scholarships

Eclipse event a full weekend of fun for the town

A group of local business owners are pulling out all the stops to put together the Great Eclipse 2024. The much-anticipated eclipse is this weekend and Mount Pleasant is expecting hundreds, if not thousands of travelers in Northeast Texas.

County moving forward with fire department

The Titus County Commissioners approved the contract between Fire Chief Solutions and Titus County at a recent meeting. Back in December 2023, commissioners voted to create a county fire department and hire a consultant to assist with that creation; this followed a vote to stop contract negotiations with the City of Mount Pleasant to continue utilizing its fire department; that contract ends in October.
