A Sixty Degree Day

The life of honeybees in the winter is like the directions on your shampoo bottle: “lather, rinse, repeat.” For honeybees it is: “eat honey, shiver to stay warm in a cluster, take a cleansing flight, repeat.” The cleansing flight step is only possible when the outside temperature is 50 degF or above, otherwise the flight muscles on the bee stop functioning. You can see the “winter cluster” of the bees in this picture of a hive split open during winter.
