Honors alumna wins award for cancer research

Jessica Velasquez, a 2016 NTCC graduate, and winner of two Jack Kent Cooke Scholarships, has just won an award in research from the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). Velasquez’s study was based on work she performed last summer at the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Training Program, an end-of-life care unit for cancer patients living in Puerto Rico. Dr. Andrew Yox, NTCC honors director was one of the references who wrote letters for Velasquez’s Puerto Rican internship last summer. MPHS junior receives surprise from internet celebrity

In the Career and Technology Department at Mount Pleasant High School, the Business Information Management I (BIM I) class in the Business cluster aims to develop technology skills with applications to personal or business situations. This course focuses on word processing, spreadsheets, databases, desktop publishing, presentation management, telecommunications, networking, operating systems, emerging technologies, and intermediate level skills. As part of the personal business letter lesson, students chose a celebrity, researched their fan mail address, and composed a letter to the celebrity explaining why they were writing the letter, why they chose them, and asked for an autographed photo. MPHS junior, Lee Davis, wrote to L.A. Beast, a YouTube sensation and competitive eater, whose YouTube channel has over 2.8 million subscribers. His videos have 500 million total views as of 2023. In addition to his online presence, he has made appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Today Show Australia, and Tosh.0.

MPHS Debate competes at UIL Congress State Championships

Five members of Mount Pleasant High School Speech and Debate traveled to Austin to compete in the UIL Congress State Tournament on January 4-5, 2023. Seniors Anthony Orellana and Merlin Cardona, and junior Angelina Hernandez represented MPHS and Region 8 in the 5A division with sophomore Gopi Amin and senior Elijah Rider making the trip as alternate competitors.

This gathering of volunteers and patriots takes place in local, state and national cemeteries in all 50 states - most recently at 3,702 participating locations as part of National Wreaths Across America Day.

The Texas A&M University-Texarkana Department of Extended Education and Community Development (EECD), in conjunction with the Mid-South OSHA Training Institute Learning Center, will host a one-day course on OSHA 7215 Silica in Construction, Maritime, and General Industry. This course covers the development and implementation of controls and strategies to prevent or mitigate silica exposures in construction, maritime, and general industries.
