Monday brought winter weather to Titus County and a large swath of the State of Texas, dropping a mix of freezing rain, ice and snow.

Mount Pleasant was centered on the dividing line of system, as points south and east saw mostly steady rains, while north and west of the city saw the winter precipitation.

While the DFW metroplex was drastically impacted, points closer to home were as well.

Icy conditions caused a multi-car accident on the bridge crossing the Red River north of Clarksville on Monday. Hwy 271 between Bogata and Talco was also iced over Monday and saw multiple accidents.

Due to the winter weather conditions this week, TxDOT crews in Bowie, Cass, Camp, Marion, Morris, Titus and Upshur Counties began pretreating many roads and bridges with brine on Monday.

Crews are focusing on pretreating the most highly traveled roadways, which include Interstate 30 and U.S. highways, along with bridges and overpasses. TxDOT will be staffed 24 hours a day through Wednesday or until there is no longer a threat of winter weather.

Motorists are asked to keep a safe traveling distance between their vehicles and mobile convoys spreading brine on the roadways. Brine is a solution consisting of salt and water designed to prevent ice and snow from sticking to surfaces.

In the event of hazardous conditions on the road due to weather, motorists are urged to stay home if possible. If travel is necessary, drivers are advised to buckle up, stay alert and slow down. You should allow for at least three times more space than usual between you and the vehicle in front of you.

The inclement weather also spawned widespread early releases on Monday and school district late starts and closures on Tuesday.

With temperatures predicted not to leave the mid-30s until Thursday, and the precipitation continuing for several days, icy conditions remain a threat for motorists.
