Mount Pleasant, TX, April 18, 2024… The Mount Pleasant Fire Department begins its annual maintenance of more than 1,000 fire hydrants throughout the City on April 22 to ensure that in the event of a fire, firefighting teams have a reliable and adequate water supply to protect the Mount Pleasant community.

The work will include flushing water from each hydrant and measuring how many gallons of water per minute it provides.  Flushing the water may cause a discoloration of the water, which could cause clothes being washed at that time to be discolored.

All hydrant maintenance will be conducted between 8 a.m. and noon on weekdays. It is advised that residents avoid washing clothes during this time frame when the MPFD is working in your area.

MPFD will be conducting this work will be published on an ongoing basis on the City’s website.

FAQs about fire hydrant maintenance:

Q.  What does fire hydrant maintenance involve and why is it important?

A.  Hydrant maintenance involves checking the functionality and flow of water from each fire hydrant. This is crucial to ensure that in the event of a fire, City of Mount Pleasant firefighting teams have reliable and adequate water supply to protect the Mount Pleasant community.

Q. Will hydrant maintenance affect my water supply?

A.    Generally, hydrant maintenance does not disrupt the regular water supply to homes. However, you might notice a temporary drop in water pressure or slight discoloration of water during and immediately after the hydrant flushing in your area.

Q.  What should I do if my water is discolored?

A. If you notice discolored water, run your cold water taps for a few minutes to clear the lines. This discoloration is short-lived and caused by harmless sediment being disturbed during the flushing process. The water quality is not impacted by this.

Q. Is it safe to use discolored water?

A.  While discolored water is typically not harmful, MPFD recommends running the water until it runs clear before using it for drinking, cooking or washing clothes to avoid staining.

If water quality does not improve or you have other questions, please contact the City of Mount Pleasant Water Department at (903) 575-4000.
