LIBRARY CORNER

The hall by our offices is lined with boxes labeled A-Z and they are all filled with books. Actually, we have multiple boxes of each letter. The Friends of the Library Book Sale is June 24-26 and this year it will be held at the Civic Center. We’re still taking clean and gently used books, DVDs and CDs. Drop your donation inside the library. If you need help unloading, just give us a call and we’ll meet you in the parking lot.

I just started Three Hours in Paris by Cara Black. Hitler spent just three hours in Paris during World War II. An attempt was made on his life and this is the fictionalized version of what happened. The interesting thing is that it was an American woman who tried to carry out the assassination. It’s too early to make a recommendation, but so far it’s really good.

Another book on my list is The Book of Lost Names by Kirsten Harmel. A semi-retired librarian in Florida runs across an article about the Nazi looting of libraries across Europe in World War II. She recognizes a picture of the cover of an eighteenth-century religious book that is now housed in a Berlin library. Those familiar with the book believe it contains a code. The story goes back to WWII where a talented young French forger uses her skills to change names and help smuggle Jewish children to Switzerland. The book actually contains the real names of all of the children. My friend, Keri, just finished it and said it was a great read! This one, too, is based on a true story.

Jeanette is reading The Music of Bees by Eileen Garvin. She said it’s a book about the friendship among three strikingly different people. One of the reviews I read said that it was about friendship and compassion and would make you want to call your friends. When Jeanette finishes, I think I’ll read it and then call my friends.

Lavonne is listening to David Baldacci’s latest, A Gambling Man. Aloysius Archer returns and, in true Baldacci style, it’s a story of good against evil and the corrupting power of money.
