June 19 is a day that will forever be ingrained in the history of African Americans in Texas; on this day in 1865, Texas slaves were finally told of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. The day is known as Juneteenth or Freedom Day, and it is a day of celebration and remembrance of the progress that has been made since the times of slavery.
