At the November 18, 2025, regular City Council meeting, the Mt. Pleasant City Council voted to hire a third-party, independent investigator to investigate an ethics complaint filed against City Council member Melanie Tafoya on November 12, 2025, by a member of the public. The Council declined to take any action prior to the completion of the independent
investigation.
This action was taken by the Council to allow for a thorough and impartial investigation to ensure both accountability and transparency.
The investigation will examine all information surrounding the specific allegation to determine whether a violation of the City Ethics Code occurred or did not occur.
Public trust in the Council as a whole depends on public trust that each Council member is responsible for actions that each Council member takes or is alleged to have taken. At the same time, complaints must be handled responsibly to ensure a fair process and legal assessment--permitting the Council member to provide all relevant information.
After completing the investigation, the investigator will report back to the Council. After receiving the results of the investigation, the Council will consider what action, if any, should be taken concerning the complaint depending on the outcome of the investigation.
