Tigers start season with 70-51 win over Greenhill
This past Friday the Mount Pleasant Tigers Boys Basketball Team kicked off their season. The Tigers are coming off a historic season, as they went undefeated in district play and were Bi-District champs.
The Tigers have high expectations for themselves as they only lost one starter, James Moore. James was a physical player and a presence inside, earning the Most Valuable Player award for the district. It would be big shoes to fill for the new addition to the team, Christon Hines, a transfer from Atascocita.
Hines would not disappoint, setting the tone for the Tigers defensively. Christon would lead the Tigers with six blocks and the only charge taken for the Tigers. The Tigers would pick up the win over Greenhill Private School by a score of 70-51.
The Tigers would come out with a lot of energy to begin the season. It was clear the boys were chomping at the bit to get on the court. The Tigers would jump out to an early 12-6 lead before Head Coach Joey Chism took an opportunity early in the season to play with the lineups. In an effort to give everyone a chance to earn minutes as the year progresses, Chism subbed in a new five players for the starters. This didn’t work out in the Tigers’ favor as they quickly found themselves down 16-14. Chism quickly made the adjustments, but the Tigers had lost momentum.
In what seemed like a dominating quarter by the Tigers, they were tied 16-16 to end the first.
The Tigers would quickly regain momentum as a Kevin Savage steal led to a thunderous two-handed dunk by Christon Hines. The Tigers would enter the locker room for the half up 32-28.
The Tigers looked good in their opening half of play. A few turnovers, which is to be expected the first game of the season. Overall the Tigers look athletic and seemed to be creating matchup nightmares all over the floor.
The second half would prove to be more of the same for the Tigers as they would increase their led to 7 to end the third period. The final period would be the Tigers’ best of the night. Scoring 23 points and only allowing Greenhill to score 9, the Tigers would end what had been a close game in a route, 70-51.
The Tigers were led by senior leader Kevin Savage. Savage led the team in points with 24 and steals with 6.
Also contributing for the Tigers were Dorian Glinton with 12 points, Buddy McGill with 10 points, Josh McGill with 7 points and Anterious Beard and Chiston Hines chipped in 6. KJ Cannon also added 5 points to complete the scoring.
Defensive standout Christon Hines led the team in blocks (6) and rebounds (11). The Tigers scored 70 but it was their outstanding defense that won them the game.
The Tigers will move on to compete in the Lone Star tournament where they will take on the OKC Storm and Frisco Lone Star in pool play. The Tigers’ next home game will be Dec. 1 against Pleasant Grove — freshman will play at 5 p.m., JV at 6:15 and Varsity at 7:30.
