Opponents in short supply, Tigers JV takes varsity tourney by storm
Football playoffs were still in full swing in Texarkana — so the basketball Tigers had to cancel their Friday night matchup with Pleasant Grove.
Unable to find a replacement on short notice, the varsity took the night off. The junior varsity and freshman, however, would join forces and head up to Prairiland to participate in a varsity tournament.
The JV mix would end up going 1-3 in the tournament, only losing the three games by a combined eight points. The JV would play Chisum in a warmup match, only losing that game by 1 point, and it helped build confidence for the young guns.
The Tigers would face Avery in the first round. They would drop that game, losing by four points. Following that up was a loss to Detroit on a game-winning 3. The Tigers found themselves so close to pulling the upset.
In the final game of the tournament the Tigers would blow out Roxton by 18 to get them in the win column.
Freshman Coach Anthony Moore said after the game, “With us taking five freshman and six JV players to a varsity tournament, playing kids that were juniors and seniors, I thought that our kids fought in every single game. The kids had nothing to hold their heads down about — they were the talk of the tourney with their lights-out 3-point shooting and had multiple coaches and people in the stands from other schools just to see them play on Saturday morning.”
The Tigers will resume action against Paris this week.
