Mt. Vernon defeats Chapel Hill in last round-one district contest

The Chapel Hill Lady Devils traveled to Mt. Vernon Tuesday night for the last district volleyball game of round one.

Both Mt. Vernon and Chapel Hill made the playoffs this past year, with Mt. Vernon being the defending district champion.

Game one didn’t go so well for the Lady Devils as they lost 19-25.

Game two was much of the same as the Lady Devils were trying to find anything they could put together against the Lady Tigers’ fast start. Game two went to Mt. Vernon 15-25.

Game three began the same way as the Lady Devils were down 1-7 — but then the tide turned. Chapel Hill mounted a ferocious comeback to fend off a three-game sweep by winning 25-20. That game three win by the Lady Devils is the first time this year in district that any district team has beaten Mt. Vernon in a game.

The game three victory not only kept their match hopes alive, but inspired the fans to urge their team on.

Game four was nip and tuck for most of the game, but finally Mt. Vernon broke it open to win 17-25.

The night’s game finished the first round of district play with the standings as follows: 1st- Mt Vernon (4-0), 2nd- Prairiland (3-1), 3rd- Chapel Hill (2-2), 4th- Chisum (1-3) and 5th- Como (0-4).
