Walter John Gatherer
Walter John Gatherer, 77, was suddenly taken away from us on June 29, 2019. He was born on December 27, 1941 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Walter Gatherer and Lillian Roest Gatherer.
John retired from Chase Bank, having spent his entire career programing computers, a profession he loved. He was the ultimate I.T. nerd, before the word even existed.
He was best known among his friends and family for his love and knowledge of music, his enthusiasm for Square Dancing, and his carefully-crafted ‘Picture Game”. His keen sense of humor charmed many.
A part of him unknown to many is that he had been a licensed bicycle racer, winning a state championship medal in his age group.
John loved animals and donated to many organizations that help them. Rather than flowers or any fuss over him, he’d ask that you donate to any animal rescue cause.
He is survived by is wife, Karen Gatherer; three sons, James Lewis and wife Barbara, Randy Lewis, and Everett Lewis and wife Lynn; eight grandchildren, Josh and Rebekah Thacker, Aaron and Hiromi Lewis, Ryan Lewis, Tristian Lewis, Nicholas, Michelle and Mike Harrison, and Anneke. He also has five sweet great granddaughters. He loved and was babied by his two sisters, Jerrine Grim of Sarasota, Florida and Janet Boyles and husband John of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He treasured all his nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his son, Frank Lewis, and his parents.
A memorial service was held for John Friday, July 5, 2019 at Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant.
