Ruby Nell (Purvis) Rogers

Ruby Nell (Purvis) Rogers, passed away on August 25, 2017 in Tyler, Texas.  She was born in Runnelstown Mississippi on January 15, 1933 to John Timothy & Ester Lillian (Downing) Purvis.  She married Neal Alton Rogers on November 20, 1950 and together they had 3 children, Debra, Brenda & Tony.  Ruby wore many hats in her life and did them all well.  She was passionate about her family, was known for her skill around the stove as well as a card table.  She worked at Gerland’s Grocery for 25 years.  She was a teacher of women, deacon’s wife of 41 years and served in the churches she loved: Kentshire (Houston), Dellwood (Mt. Pleasant), Nevills Chapel (Mt. Pleasant) and Southern Oaks (Tyler).  

Ruby is survived by her daughter, Debra Miller of Tyler, Texas; daughter & son-in-law, Brenda & Rev. Bruce Bear of Huffman, Texas; son & daughter-in-law, Rev. Tony Alton & Terrie Rogers of Bowie, Texas; sisters, Maureen Harrison of Tomball, Texas & Joyce Thornton of Brandon, Mississippi; grandchild, April Miller of Addison, Texas; grandchild, Crystal Miller of Addison, Texas; grandchild, Timothy Miller of Houston, Texas; grandchild and spouse, Steven & Amanda Bear of Honolulu, Hawaii; grandchild & spouse, Michael & Tiffany Bear of Rosenburg, Texas; grandchild & spouse, Holly & Travis Friedrichesen of Conroe, Texas; grandchild & spouse, Dr. Jeremy Alton & LouAnn Rogers of Arlington, Texas; grandchild & spouse, Heather & Robert Blake of Forney, Texas; grandchild & spouse, Rev. Jordan Neal & Julia Rogers of Nederland, Texas; 24 great grandchildren, Joseph & William Miller, Jacob, Katie, Kara, Nathaniel & Isabelle Bear, Stephanie, Cheyanne & Alexandria Friedrichsen, Jeremiah, Sara Beth, Ella Grace, Micah, & Katie Joy Rogers, McKinnley, Bailey, Emmerson, Paisley, Deacon, & Piper Blake, Josiah, Elijah & Addison Rogers; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends along life’s way.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Neal Alton Rogers; parents; sisters, Winnie Lou Stringer, Ina Mae Kennerly & Mildred Purvis; brothers, James, John & Robert Purvis; in-laws, Williams Felix Rogers & Tennie Mae (Johnson) Rogers; son-in-law, Edward Miller. Donations may be made to the Hospice of East Texas, 4111 University Blvd. Tyler, TX 75701. Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday, August 28, 2017 at the Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home.  Services will be held at 10:00 AMTuesday, August 29, 2017 in the Bates-Cooper-Sloan Chapel.  Interment will follow in the Farmers Academy Cemetery.   Online registry is available at
