Lela Mae Denny

The loved mother, grandmother and friend, Lela Mae Denny, went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019, at the age of 96. Lela Mae was born on August 8, 1922, in Titus County to John and Viva Lennox. She was the oldest of six children.

She lived in Mount Pleasant for most of her life and was a long-time member of Highland Park Baptist Church where she served as Director of Children’s Department and as WMU Director. For many years she also visited the shut-ins and homebound of the church especially after her retirement from West Department Store.

She was an active member of the Rebekah Lodge #127 and also served as Noble Grand twice.

In 2010 she moved to Gladewater to reside with her son and daughter-in-law and was very happy. She made many friends there. She enjoyed both of her church families at First Baptist Church of Gladewater and the fellowship with the Nazarene church family alongside her friend, Elwanda Walker.

She also enjoyed the fellowship of spending time with friends and family and loved to play SkipBo and other games with them.

She is survived by her son Max Denny and wife, Sammie, of Gladewater, daughter, Barbara Allen and husband Royce of Robstown, granddaughter, Debbie Ott and husband Jimmy of Kilgore, grandsons, Tim Allen and wife Marsha of Kilgore, Jimmy Denny and wife, Teresa, of Crowley, eight great grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren, two brothers; Travis Lennox of Garland and J.R. Lennox and wife, Bettie, of Fort Worth as well as numerous nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Millard Denny, three brothers and many longtime friends.

A Celebration of Life for Lela Mae will be held at Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant Monday, Feb. 11, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Masonic Cemetery in Mount Pleasant.

Memorials can be made to Highland Park Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant, First Baptist Church of Gladewater, and Heart to Heart Hospice of Longview.
