George Harold Smyth
George Harold Smyth passed away at his home on June 4, 2019 at the age of 69. George was born on September 30, 1949 in Mt. Pleasant, TX.
He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church for over 40 years. During that time, he has worn many hats in his purpose to serve the Lord. Just to name a few, he was the “sound guy”, an usher, a people greeter, a maintenance man, a plumber, candy dispenser, master of keys and the thermostat, food taster/critic, and king of the back pew.
At home, he was a retired ranch hand/manager for L. R. Hinson for many years. He spent his life chasing cows and getting “caught” a few times. He branded cattle and got branded himself by way of a horn or two. He gathered eggs, fixed tractors, and baled hay way into the night.
He built fences, broke fences, and mended fences. He gathered “fertilizer” for the pastures, dug holes and filled holes. He did all this and more while doing his best to teach his children about hard work and sacrifice. Every vehicle was used, and all the clothes were hand me downs, but the love was always brand new and without end.
His most important role, however, was “Papaw”. He leaves behind a heartbroken crew of great grandbabies, grandbabies and grand teens. He was blessed in life with five children; Rodney Smyth of Talco, John and Janet Losey of Mt. Pleasant, Richard Smyth of Talco, Nathan and Melissa Henry of Mt. Pleasant, and Jamie Smyth of Talco. His grandchildren; Justin and Katherine Koder, Jake and Farashae Schoppe, Christian Smyth, Edith Smyth, Dakota Henry, Michael Henry, Bradly Butler, Sherman Butler-Losey, Desiree Butler, Jesslin Butler, and Levi (Butler) Losey. He is also survived by his sister and brother in law; David and Brenda St. Claire, his brother and sister in law; Roy and Patricia Smyth of Argo, brother; Gary Smyth and numerous nieces and nephews.
Although the time was far too soon for us, George went on to glory to be with his wife, Betty Lou Smyth (Sellers), a grandson; Baby Jesse (Jr), his parents; Leland and Edith (Alley) Smyth, and some brothers and sisters.
A memorial service will be held on June 22, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
