The Northeast Texas Community College Professional Driving Academy continues to grow and supply high-demand CDL drivers to the local area. Four new students recently graduated from the program. The four-week professional driving academy includes 160 hours of training and the cost includes the DOT physical, drug screen, MVR and CDL permit. Students spend 50 hours in the classroom and 110 hours on the road driving. The cost is $4,191 and financial aid may be available.

The annual spring meeting of the Walter Prescott Webb Society, the collegiate auxiliary of the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) met again in person this year, in Austin. At the end of the conference, on 29 February, Lisa Berg, the TSHA Director of Education presented the Caldwell Awards for essays achieving excellence in Texas history. Again, scholars from Honors Northeast, the honors program at Northeast Texas Community College, scored around the apex in the competition. Surprisingly, however, this year, it was not in the freshman/sophomore division where NTCC scholars excelled, but in the junior/senior, “university division”—including those scholars who had more than sixty hours of credit.

The Texas Supreme Court heard oral arguments last week on the question of whether state regulators can be sued by abortion providers hoping to block enforcement of the state’s restrictive abortion law, known as Senate Bill 8.

Texas A&M Forest Service awarded 81 recipients grants to conduct prescribed burns this year. For the 2022 fiscal year, the agency has approved $522,950 in grant funds to private landowners in Texas with a goal to treat 18,250 acres.
